Jamie Oliver is declaring war - against fatty foods in America! The Brit is so passionate about fighting childhood obesity that he set his new TV series Food Revolution in Huntington, W. Va. to teach the community how to cook healthy foods in their homes and schools. "It's all very well, me sitting in England being busy," he tells Rachael, "but I've got an opportunity to make a difference in [one of] the biggest countries in the world with one of the biggest health problems in the world."
"I could not be prouder to have you to talk about this topic," Rachael says. "You know that it's close to my heart; I think it is the number one thing we should be focused on."
Jamie agrees, and points out that obesity is costing the U.S. government $150 billion a year and poses a critical health challenge, especially to young people because it can lead to diabetes and heart disease. In Huntington, he spent four months teaching kids about nutrition and showing the community how to cook healthy meals from scratch. He hopes the series and his companion cookbook will inspire others to also demand healthier food in schools. "Maybe you talk to a principal and you ask to see the food - that in itself will change certain stuff." Jamie also asks anyone interested to sign his online petition to show support. "It takes 30 seconds, just to say that you are in support of fresh food in schools ... and I'm going to take it to the White House!"
Jamie wants to assure Americans that they can clean up their diets while still enjoying a few snacks. "In England, the biggest brand of potato chips has reduced its fat by 2/3 and lowered the salt, but people still love them!" Jamie says. "It doesn't mean that the things that you love have to disappear."
